Harlan Ellison Ruined My life

On June 28, 2018 we lost one of the true giants of speculative fiction, Harlan Ellison. What follows here is an essay that I have long been attempting to write — even before Harlan’s passing.

* * * *

I started writing professionally in 1981 (for the comicbook publication, Amazing Heroes); in ’83 I met Jeff Rovin the publisher of Video Gaming Illustrated, and he hired me to first write reviews for the publication, and later to become part of the editorial staff.

At some point between those two events (late ’82 or early ’83) I happened to have met Harlan. It was at a comicbook convention in New York City. Harlan was on the floor of the con expounding on something or other to a gaggle of thoroughly entranced fans. These fans were completely taken with the fact that someone as legendary as Harlan was talking to them (after all, he had written City on the Edge of Forever — for STTOS — as well as edited the two Dangerous Visions)

These kids (ha, “kids” they were probably my age or younger) were all “Mr. Ellison…” “Mr. Ellison…” and Harlan was thrilled with the attention and happy to indulge them. Being all of 27 or 28 and having published a couple of articles, as well as working as an assistant editor for Amazing Heroes and The Comics Journal, I was totally full of myself and so I walked right up to Harlan and addressed him.

“Harlan,” I said (somehow thinking myself on par with him). “My name is Bob Sodaro, and I just want you to know that you saved my life.”

“Of course I did.” He responded. “How?”

“You wrote [In Dangerous Visions] that a writer writes, and that if he can’t write, he should go out and work with his hands ‘til he can write, and then come back and show everyone that he can. Well I’m currently working with my hands at Remington Arms, and, like you, I also write for Gary (Groth; publisher of TCJ). What you said, (“A writer writes”) was so important to me that I wrote it down and taped it to my typewriter to remind myself.”

It was at this point that Harlan smiled and said, “That’s great, someday, when you get to my place you can have taped to your typewriter what I have taped to mine.”

And all of a sudden — like the kids he was entertaining a moment ago — I too am a fan, and eager to know what this great bit of wisdom that Ellison has taped to his typewriter.

“What?” I breathlessly asked.

“I’m a writer and I don’t have to take shit from anyone.”

It was at that very moment (even though I didn’t realize it for years to come) that Harlan Ellison ruined my life.

You see, what I heard was that — as a writer — I too didn’t have to take shit from anyone.

To be sure, I did, in fact, go home, type that line up, and tape it to my typewriter. And for years (and years) that followed, I totally bought into the mantra that I was a writer and didn’t have to take shit from anyone.

As I aged and maneuvered through the rest of my life, in the back of my head, whenever I was getting static from those around me, I remembered Harlan’s words, and conducted myself accordingly. Needless to say, the mere arrogance of living life like that most assuredly got me into (and perhaps even out of) numerous incidents.

Now I realize that I have not (and perhaps never will) achieve the mastery of Ellison, but I still believe that what he told me applies to not only me, but to all writers, as in an interview I read (in TCJ of all places) with Bill Gaines — the former publisher of EC Comics, and then publisher of Mad Magazine — stated that  writers were everything, and without writers we’d have…roller derby.

Further, I recalled something that Robert A. Heinlein (one of my favorite authors) said, that a writer writes, and gets his writing published. Over the years, I’ve written numerous ad spots, thousands of articles, contributed to dozens of books, and penned a number of short stories, as well as a play or two.

As a postscript to the above, I did once get the opportunity to interview Harlan, for Amazing Heroes (#44 April 1984) where we discussed his upcoming story in Daredevil #208, entitled The Deadliest Night in My Life, which was illustrated by David Mazzuchelli. A story which has been hailed as “One of the Best Daredevil Stories Ever [written]”

So, again, while I’m freely willing to admit that I’m not (and probably never will be) “Harlan Ellison Great” for better or worse, I am a writer, and I do believe that I have a way with words.

On the first night of Chanukah...

Yeah, I know that Chanukah is over, but I didn’t have access to the camera ‘til today. This year for some reason (unfathomable by me), the wife and I only exchanged gifts with each other on the first night. This is what I received on that night.

Oh, and while we’re on the subject of Chanukah, a friend of mine showed me this very entertaining Menorah.

Which got me to thinking that I’ll just bet that there is a Spidey or a Marvel Menorah out there, especially as I already have these items:

Sorry for the blurriness on the yamauka. I took that pic with my cell phone camera, and, well, I guess I was too close to get a good shot. I'll have to get a better pic of it later. In the mean time. It’s Festivus for the rest of us!

The Angels want to wear my red shoes (or not)

I’ve always loved these lyrics from Elvis Costello, and once even owned a pair of red leather shoes (which I wore until I could no longer wear them), but given that there is now a pair of red Trek shoes I can only wonder. if I (or the angels) wear them, will I (or they) be the first to die?

It’s not often that skaters and Trekkies can find common ground, but this weekend, Payless shoe stores across the galaxy will debut the all-new Star Trek STPL x—a line of Trek-inspired skate shoes from Airwalk. Those who prefer to not leave the house can order the limited-edition kicks through the Payless website.

If you want to know more, or get your own pair, go here. Me? I’m a superstitious guy, so I think I’ll pass.

Big Apple/Wizard World NY ’09

Well kids, I just came back from the first-ever, Big Apple Wizard show, and let me tell you that I had a heckava time.

I met my buddy Mark Mazz in the City, and we had breakfast, then trudged into the show where were comped in courtesy of Peter Katz of Big Apple (Thanks Pete) then we spent much of the morning wandering around the show, meeting old friends, and checking out the sites.

After a while we wound up in Artists’ Ally, where we hung with old friends, before meeting up with Ed Pereira, and having lunch with none other than Linda Hamilton (Terminator), Nichelle Nichols (Star Trek), John Schnider (Dukes of Hazard/Smallville), and Todd Bridges (Diff’rent Strokes).

And no, I’m neither kidding or exaggerating in the slightest. These stars and us (along with pal Keith Williams) sat around for a bit of time eating and swapping stories about our kids and stuff (Nichelle told us how Lt. Uhura got her name).

This was seriously the best con that I’ve attended in quite some time (not to mention that I scored some 30 Spidey titles in my on-going effort to complete my entire run of every original Spidey story and appearance published.

Now it is bed time. Tomorrow is another day.

Give it all you’ve got!

If there is one perfect Scotsman in all the world, it is Scotty from the USS Enterprise, but you knew I was going to say that. He keeps those engines purring like kittens, and the ship on course.

Still we know that the lad has a great affinity for the quantum mechanics of Star Fleet. So it is only fair that he get his own fast food figure with the issuance of the this round of BK/Trek toys.

So, without any further adieu, I present to you all, the incomparable Mr. Scott!

Now come on, Scotty, give us all you’ve got!

More BK Trek Toys

Before I get started today, I wanted to upload a few of the new BK Trek toys that I acquired yesterday. Plus I wanted to add this video clip from this past Saturday’s SNL show that...well, watch it and you’ll see.

First up, the toys.

Now for the fun stuff. This one is for all those über-geek fanboys who still live in the basement of their parent’s house and have never grown up (I swear, if some of these overweight, myopic continuity-addled yabos had lived in the time of the Sparetans they would have been left out on the mountain side.)

The Thing of it all

Yesterday I acquired yet another of the Marvel “Bubble gum” toy characters. This one was The Thing, from the Fantastic Four. Again, it was at the movies (this time when I went to see the wicked-cool Star Trek with a bunch of buddies of mine), only it was at a different theater. However, when I got home and looked through the pile of toys that I recently cleared off my desk shelf, I realized that I had actually acquired this toys some time back, and not only had I forgotten that I already had it, but I had forgotten to post it when I got it.

OK, so here it is now. More on Trek tomorrow when I wake up and can coherently write about it. (Perhaps I’ll be able to acquire some new Trek toys as well from Burger King).

Oh, yeah when I was posting Thing, I realized that the image I had put up previously of the Spidey toy was taken with my old cell phone’s camera, and well, was a tad blurry, so, I decided that Spidey deserved a better image, so I snapped off another shot, and am posting it here. Hope you all appreciate the lengths I go to for you folks. So now I have (ahem) two Things.

Well, that’s about it for now kids. Time to rack out. Catch you in the funnypapers!

Time to Trek

This weekend the Star Trek reboot happens. As you all know (or can probably tell from the trailer that has been burning up the Net, this is a major departure from the type of Trek film that we’ve seen in the past. The new film is directed by J.J. Abrams, the fellow who brought us Cloverfield, Alias, and Fringe.

This film promises to inject a load of action and drama into the franchise that has been sorely lacking for the past couple of films, and hopefully set up the next 35 or so years. Still, as can be expected, there is a small bit of controversy amongst the hard core elitist Trekkies.

If you haven’t already seen the following video, you are in for a treat. If you have seen it, watch it again, you’ll still be laughing.

Trekkies Bash New Star Trek Film As 'Fun, Watchable'

Now that you have a proper perspective on the whole event, here are some of the toys you will find at Burger King relating to this wicked-cool flick:

There is a set of four glasses, which, historically speaking, hold their value better than the toys.

There are also 16 Trek figures that are going to be released three at a clip over tthe next four or so weeks.

Wolverine grabs a Slurpee!

Yesterday (or was it very early this morning? Who can remember). I posted a number of images of the 7-eleven Terminator Slurpee cups and figure straws. Then, while I was doing it, I recalled that I had completely forgotten to post the images of the 7-eleven Wolverine: X-Men Origins cups and straws, even though that film had come out last weekend (and I had acquired the items in question fully a week earlier).

As stated, I was unable to snag the Papa John’s Wolverine X-Treme Pizza, as the only Papa John’s that was close enough to me to realistically patronize, closed a couple of months back. I can’t tell you how glad I am that it was open when they issued their Spidey-pizza.

Well, I’m going to rectify that egregious error right now, by posting them here.

There were three cups in this set.

There were also three “figure” straws.

That is to say, each Slurpee straw had a detachable figure attached to it that could be removed from the straw itself, attached to a base, and then posed for display. I’m glad that they chose to do this, as the Iron Man figures from last year had a little trouble standing.

While I’m not entirely sure what other movie-related items will wind up at your local fast food eatery (other than the already announced Transformers and G.I. Joe), I know that I will — in all probability — spend the rest of these next couple of months scanning the web, and prowling my local fast food franchises to see what I can score.

Right now, I’m now looking for Star Trek / BK toys, which are currently available.

Fanboys & girls, start your engines!

Trek Toys at BK

Arrrrggggghhhhhh! I just learned that there are Star Trek Toys at Burger King, and while that really is a very cool thing (there are not many sets of Fast food Trek toys), not only are there four glasses, but there are (apparently) 16 figures that get packed in the kid’s meals!

I’m going to go broke collecting these damn things (there are also going to be some fast food (7-eleven) Slurpee cups on the horizon as well.

Yep, I’ve got my collecting cut out for me.
