Comics Creators Community Spotlight

 This is the latest publication from Jim Main's Main Enterprises.

To be sure, Comics Creators Community Spotlight isn’t so much a new concept for Jim as it is a return to the type of stuff that he has done for years. That is to say, promoting comicbooks and comicbook creators in the Indie community.

When I first met Jim (about a hundred years or so ago), he was working on a couple of similar projects. These types of comic mags were all the rage before the advent of the Intertubes, and well, it was where most of us got our first break in the business.

As for myself, I began on Amazing Heroes (a legendary Fantigraphics publication), which lead to me working for virtually every comics-related magazine published during the ’80s & ’90s.

Well, Jim is using several of my Indie Comic reviews in this first issue (as well as in subsequent issues), so I’m highly recommending that you click the link above and order a copy or 12 (give some to your friends, they'll thank you!).

The Writing Life

So, I've been reviewing comics, films, books, and stuff on and off for; well, years, and quite often I’m never sure if I’m writing in a vacuum or what, because well, most of the times I really don’t get any feedback from my audience. Every now and then, however, something comes along that lets me realize that, yep, there actually are folks out there reading what I’m writing. This occurred to me recently when a couple of comicbooks that I wrote about actually used a used a quote from my review as a cover blurb to help promote their comic.

Truthfully, I’m flattered that someone would think that something I said would help them market their comic to the masses.

One of the comics I’m talking about is Healed, a comic that explores the concept of immortality and looks at it from the perspective of, what would happen if everyone on the planed were suddenly (mysteriously) healed of all diseases, and no one would die save for accidental (violent) death. The comic is very well written and raises all sorts of interesting questions that it doesn’t always answer — which isn’t a bad thing, actually, as it really is meant to be more thought-provoking than solution-based.

I am highly recommending Healed by George O’Connor and S Griffin. My reviews of it appear here, here, and here. I understand that the five issue series will soon be collected into a trade paperback. I’m looking forward to that, and hope that these guys decide to produce more stories in this vein, as I’m certain that they are not quite done with what can be said on the matter.

Is there a Magnus Robot Fighter in our future?

We recently learned that DreamWorks Animation SKG has recently purchased Classic Media for $155 million. what this coolness means is that Dreamworks has acquired properties ranging from comics to cartoon and television properties which include characters such as Casper the Friendly Ghost, Rocky and Bullwinkle, The Lone Ranger, Where’s Waldo?, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and the licensing and production rights to Gold Key comic book characters including Magnus, Robot Fighter, Doctor Solar, and Turok, Son of Stone.

The three Gold Kee characters appeared together under the Valiant/Acclaim banner during the ’80s/’90s With Doctor Solar recentluy appearing under the Dark Horse Logo. Currently The Lone Ranger appears in Dynamite Entertainment comics. The deal could very well prove lucrative for DreamWorks as many of the licences that they have acquired are for much beloved characters.

Hopefully it will mean the return for some of these characters to the public light, especially, Magunus.



We son't know who produced the above animated short, but it is very cool (if crude), and it makes us long for the iconic Russ Manning character.
