Hero Hunt

Well, I got totally lucky, I found five of the remaining six Marvel Hero toys from McDonald’s this afternoon! (Hey, I’m a geek, for me, this IS getting lucky!) So here you go!

Now all I need is The Hulk, and I’ll have the whole set.

Funnybooks stuff I’ve recently acquired

OK, OK, I know that I’ve been a little lax about posting here, my “excuse” is that I’ve been a tad busy (sorry that I have an actual meatspace live, but that’s the way it goes sometimes droogs). Anyways, I’ve recently acquired some kinda cool funnybook-related stuff. First up is this nifty set of Spidey “Tupperware” that I scored at a local “junk” shop.

Then, as it turns out, Marvel heroes have come to McDonald’s! Yep, it looks like for the next several weeks we will be treated to a passel of Marvel Superheroes. First up are Wolverine and my pal Spidey, who will be followed by (not necessarily in this order) Silver Surfer, Human Torch, Iron Man, Thing, Captain America Hulk. Personally, I can’t wait for the Thor movie, Cap movie and Avenger movie sets (which should be out in 2011, 2012, & 2013 respectively).

In the mean time here are some Images from the current set:

Lastly, I managed to acquire yet another Iron Man Dr. Pepper can (from the movie tie-in set) that is different from the one that I already have. How cool is that?

OK, now to get back to some serious stuff (like looking for the rest of the Marvel Heroes/Mcd fast food toys!

Advice for writers, part the second

A week or so back I re-posted a blog from Marvel's talent manager C.B. Cebulski which carried some very solid advice for writers wishing to break into Marvel. Today I wanted to post the second half of that advice.

I know yesterday's Tips & Tweets didn't sit well with some people. I got plenty of responses along the lines of, "But I only wanna write for Marvel" and "All my ideas are Marvel ideas!" Now while this is nice to hear, it's also a bit disappointing. Writers write. Period. About anything and everything. And while it's great you wanna write solely for Marvel, if that's the case, you may want to reconsider writing as a career choice. You should never limit yourself creatively like that!
Yeah, this is the kind of advice that folks really need to hear, but you can read the rest of it yourself.

Here come the Indexes (Indices?)

Yep, I just acquired my comps of The Official Index to the Marvel Universe Avengers, Thor, & Captain America.

With issue #1 I was just contributing to the Captain America indexing, but starting w/#2 I began to pitch in and help our beleaguered editor with the Thor entries as well.

Anyways, I just got my comps, and, well, I’m kind of tickled by it all.

Take that, evildoers!

So, a week or so back we talked about how the misguided fools at Westboro church were going to protest at the International Comic Con in San Diego. Well, at the time we pointed out how we thought that they were, well, asshats, apparently, we weren't alone, as when they showed up at rthe Convention, they were met with hundreds of fans who launched their own (hilarious), counter protest, prompting one to ask, “How do you embarrass someone who is into steam-punk cosplay, and and dresses up as animie girls, superheroes, robots, furries, and, well you can guess the rest...

(My favorite is the guy carrying the sign stating that God loves everybody!)

Farmville Has it all!

OK, no, I really don't believe that, but, well Virtually everyone I know plays Farmville on Face book (or Yoville, or Mafia Wars), and recently 7-Eleven did a tie-in with these three games, producing cups representing them all.

Well, I spotted them, and — since the wife is one of those Farmville addicts —plays it all the time, I decided to score her one of the cups.

So, here is that cup (front and back), and well, that should be that.

Me, I don’t play, but I do collect fast food tie-ins, and well, this certainly qualifies.

Newspaper funnies

Spotted this in the paper on Sunday, and thought I’d share it with you. I always like Foxtrot, especially when Bill Amend makes a totally fanboy, funnybook, geek reference, as he did yesterday.

Then I saw this Dustin strip today, and it reminded me of my brother, Ron, and well, I figure I’d post it as well.

Have fun!

Introducing Atlas Unleashed!

For several months I’ve been talking about this new publisher that I’ve been working with to develop new properties, and bring some older ones back into the limelight. The name of that company is Atlas Unleashed. Well, I am very pleased to say that the first issue under the Atlas Unleashed logo has hit the shelves.

That’s right, effendis, Schizophrenia #1 is out there, and it is a very compelling package. It contains four stories that range from the eerily compelling, haunting dream-like state of by Nathaniel Baker & Shawnti Therrien; to the off-kilter oddness of Angry Man by Acevedo Marzan & the late, great, Rusty Haller. Then there is the Spartan starkness of Rich Terdoslavich’s Compulsion, and finally, rounded out by A visit with good Ole...Doctor Frommenstadt by our imperious leader, mark mazz aided and abetted by the able-bodied Mr. James Webb.

Yep, this first issue of our premier title dares our readers to — quite literally — “Unleash the nightmares within...”

Yeah, we certainly have our work cut out for ourselves, and yep, we truly believe ourselves up for the task at hand. We will be debuting the comic at the upcoming NY ComicCon. Make sure you stop up and talk to us.

Official Index to the Marvel Universe: The Amazing Spider-Man

OK, now this is really cool, you all know that I’ve been contributing to Official Index to the Marvel Universe for some time, well, now Marvel has collected all of the Spidey entries from the first volume (to be sure, they also collected Iron Man & the X-Men, but I didn’t contribute to those entries), and issued them as a softcover edition.

Yep, I though that it is a really nifty thing for Marvel to do as well, and well, I just got my (comp) copies (two of ‘em!) today, so I’m pretty pumped. Further, if I had realized that Marvel was going to issued them as a book, I would have contributed entries to the other series as well, that way I would have gotten my name in the other volumes as well. Needless to say, for the second series (out now) I’m contributing to not on the Captain America entries, but to the Thor entries as well (Maybe I should do a couple of Avenger entries just so I can get that book when it comes out as well, eh?)

This is (in case I haven't already said it a dozen times already), kind of a cool thing for me, and gets me pumped to do more entries (which will make Al, and my editors really happy I’m guessing).

Seriously, WTF?

I just read this, and I’m not sure if it is a joke, or a hoax, but for sure it can’t be for real...

At Comic-Con, lots of people wear costumes. It seems that on at least one day, a whole group of people will dress up as a bunch of assholes. Yep, that’s right; apparently since they have nothing better to do, members of the Topeka, Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church, which is led by Fred Phelps, plan to picket Comic-Con in San Diego.

Some folk just don know what to do with their time.

Advice for writers...

In all the years I've been reading (and writing for and about) comics, this is the most salient column and advice I've ever read for those witching to get into writing for Marvel comics. It comes from Marvel talent manager C.B. Cebulski himself, so, well, he ought to know.

“New writers, sending pitch ideas of any kind to editors cold is a definite mistake.

If you want to write for Marvel, get published elsewhere first. Marvel editors only review previously published work to judge your chops.

All writers need to snail mail the editors directly.

Yes, self-published work, mini-comics, webcomics, editorial cartoons, newspaper strips, novels... all count as published work for writers.”

To read the rest of the column, check out Cebulski's column.

It is a two-part column, so there should be more later.

Through a mirror, darkly...

We just learned this from Bleeding Cool.
Bleeding Cool has previously reported that the book will become a fortnightly Dan Slott title, but whatever the future, they’re going out with a bang. Issue 647 will be written by Brand New Day writers Dan Slott, Bob Gale, Joe Kelly, Mark Waid, Fred Van Lente and Zeb Wells and drawn by, well, pretty much everyone, in a 64 page special for $4.99.

So while we are not entirely sure what to think, we can’t help but to feel that — given how badly our favorite hero has been treated over the past couple of years — we’re not entirely sure if this is better or worse.

Wait, what were we talking about???

I’m sure there is a point for this, but I’m not sure it even matters...

Again I ask, what were talking about???

Another swipe @ Twilight

Don't you just love it when someone else says what you are thinking?

Leveraging comics

Have you been watching the TNT TV series, Leverage? I have (well, off and on), but yea, it is a very good show that airs during the summer when broadcast TV shows are on hiatus. Well in the episode The Inside Job, they have to crack a super security system called “The Steranko.” Naturally, I think that this is a comicbook reference. What cements this feeling is that the following episode, The Scheherazade Job,one of the characters (Alec Hardison, played by Aldis Hodge refers to himself as Super Skrull.

Pretty cool, eh?

Warz & rumors of Warz

You got it kiddies, the third installment of my wicked-cool web comic Girl Skout Warz which appears over at InkBot.com.

The (new) face of Spider-Man

Well, it has been reported that the search for the new web-flinging hero has finally comes to an end, as Sony Pictures has announce that 26-year-old US-born and UK-raised actor Andrew Garfield will be playing Peter Parker and his alter-ego. This means that nearly two years from now, on July 3, 2010, the Spider-Man reboot will be swinging into theaters, in 3D of course.
Garfield’s credits include Heath Ledger’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, and the upcoming The Social Network, which focuses on the lives of the founders of the now-ubiquitous Facebook. Garfield is also set to appear in the drama Never Let Me Go with Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan. The 26-year-old dual citizenship holder also starred in critically acclaimed films Lions for Lambs and Boy A.

Right now, the entire blogisphere is on fire with the news of Garfield being tapped for the role. The Spider-Man franchise is one of the most successful in film history and the three previous motion pictures have collectively grossed more than $2.5 billion in worldwide box office.

Batman funnies

Saw this comic strip (Bound & Gagged)the other day, and thought it was entertaining, so I thought I’d share it with all of you...

Enjoy.

Non “Funny” Funnybooks on the Rise

We’ve been reading comics since around 1961. It is — as we’ve often said — our preferred form of entertainment. In fact, the guy we’ve been ...
